ASDは「Art in Social Dynamics(社会の力学におけるアート)」、ANDは「Art in Natural Dynamics(自然の力学におけるアート)」の略です。

YODOYA is pleased to host a talk, based on society and environment, entitled “ART IN THE AGE OF GREAT ACCELERATION: ASD & AND” by Ryuta Ushiro, Chim ↑ Pom, and Yutaro Midorikawa, art director.

2020s just began. It’s going to be a tremendously tough decade. “Apocalypse Becomes the New Normal”[1], Paul Krugman titled his last article on The New York Times. “The arts world enters the next era grappling with its conscience over the climate, #MeToo, diversity and philanthropy”[2], Jan Dalley describe on The Financial Times. As you already know, problem is everywhere on the planet. And the world is accelerating. What’s happening in the art world? What will art look like in the future?

Nick Bostrom calculates the world economy as follows: the rate of growth that took two centuries before 5000 BC is accomplished in ninety minutes today [3]. In this age of great acceleration, you can mainly find two types of art, ASD and ANP. ASD stands for Art in Social Dynamics and AND is Art in Natural Dynamics. ASD has to do with a human-based issues in modern society like law, finance, military, ethics, religion, politics and so on. “Artists will continue to embrace Instagram”, Alina Cohen predicts 2020s on Artsy [4]. By using social media, the transformation of art will continue to accelerate. AND, on the other hand, has to do with a nature-based issues on the contemporary earth like climate change, disaster, extinction, mutation and so on. “A major gallery announces a plan to go carbon-neutral”[5], Tim Schneider summarizes the ongoing trend in the art world based on “woke as a business strategy” on artnet. AND based on the environment will be further emphasized from now on.

“It (nature) had no subject”, Michel Serres wrote in The Nature Contract. And “We are distributing the Earth and making it quake! Now it has a subject once again”[5]. Although anthropocene is clearly a critical term toward humanism, it world be possible to say that the end of anthropocene means when nature has no subject once again. Contemporary art is already “late contemporary art”, like the term “late capitalism” started to be used since the mid 2010s, or it is probably transforming to something next just right now.

Keeping that in mind or not keeping that in mind, we think art in the age of acceleration in this talk.

Please come and enjoy.
